Day 1 - 3

Day 1

Brain storming ideas, I don't strictly aim to keep the themes as they are optional, however I find that focus is helpful to guide my idea generation down some unique paths.

Somewhere along the line I had the idea of a graveyard as the playable area for the game. My brain went into overdrive and we ended up with a line from The Monster Mash song going around and around in my head.

Graveyard Smash

  • Was the game a Bullet Hell?
  • a shoot em up?
  • Are we Ghost Hunting?
  • or are we a Ghost Haunting?

I finally decided that I wanted implement a puzzle to the game, it's less about killing mobs more about avoiding them and escaping.

Day 2

I am no artistic master so I would rather use art that someone else has made to help my project come to life.
Day 2 was mostly looking for an art style that mirrored the idea i had in my head.

I needed a Tileset along with character and mobs, this took some time since to just filter through the options

Once I had the Tileset for the world I set about building the playmap in Tiled as it easily exported to Lua, with the Simple Tiled Implementation (STI) library for LOVE2D, getting the map in place is rather straightforward.

Lastly I worked on what the audio was being to feel like.

Day 3

  • Completed first pass of Character Animation, Movement and Collisions
  • Implemented a cheap torch lighting effect, meaning we have a torch but there are no lighting object or shadows in the game, but that's really not the point, I wanted to invoke the limited view range with a torch light style vibe. Maybe I'll have time to had shadows before the end of the Game Jam but currently it's good enough.

I still have heaps of things to get completed
